How Many, How Much? During the early years of Karl's career, there was little quantitative understanding of the role that microorganisms played in the sea?how many there were and what they did.The year before, Bob Ballard, John Corliss, and others had discovered communities of giant white tubeworms living around hydrothermal vents in the deep sea of the Galapagos Rift. ?I would like to think of my role, especially in the last 5 years, as being a science facilitator and opportunity broker.e.Karl's parents gave their children a long leash, encouraging their interest in the hippie movement; Karl's father even helped him pick out a motorcycle when David was 15 years old. ?That was a good start to my academic career,? says Karl.In the late 1960s, Holm-Hansen developed a new way of quantifying ocean microbes?by measuring ATP, the common energy currency of life.Originally, the HOT program research was entirely ship-based, with scientists going out once a month to make observations and conduct experiments over 5 days.

We have recently established a new Center for Microbial Oceanography that will broaden these efforts to include metagenomics and ecosystem modeling and prediction.Because I am interested in the ecology of microorganisms, including their response to climate variability, most of my research is conducted aboard vessels at sea.Research in my laboratory has centered around the ocean's carbon cycle from photosynthetic production of organic matter to carbon sequestration in the deep sea.In 1988 we established an open ocean time-series station in the subtropical North Pacific as a sentinel for observing the effects of climate on the structure and function of microbial communities. To date I have participated in more than fifty expeditions including more than twenty to Antarctica. This ongoing ecological David M.

He set a very high bar, especially for a mediocre student like me, but I was up to the ?challenge of the sea.The enormous scope and scale of the global ocean and our current limitations in sampling it will always remain as the primary challenge of the sea.It is nearly overwhelming to keep up with the field, to remain at or near the cutting edge, and to sustain state-of-the-art research facilities and skilled technical personnel. One major challenge in all fields of science, but especially in microbial oceanography, is the rapid pace of new discovery and the increasingly large volume of relevant scientific literature.I eventually graduated from playing with insects in my mother?s flower garden to hikes in the woods and long family camping excursions by the water.I consider myself to be a scientist and educator, someone who seeks and disseminates knowledge about the sea around us.I am not that old, but neither am I as young as I used to be, or wish to be.Learn more about Dave Karl?s research here.
